FHE--Everybody's Doing It!

In 2007 D and I committed to holding weekly Family Home Evenings as our church leaders counsel. We sing together, have a lesson, enjoy an activity, and eat a treat. It's such a simple format, but we've really loved the consistent fun.Tonight's treat: Rita's Water Ice. (If you don't know what water ice is, think "gourmet slurpees." Natives are crazy for water ice here in Jersey.) J chose cherry, I chose fudge brownie, and D had mango chosen for him. We'd just love to hear about what you did for your FHE tonight.

At our house, Kelly was in charge of lesson. She chose a lesson about the importance of taking care of our pets (of which we have none). Casey chose activity, which was riding our bikes to the park. Shelby was in charge of treats, so we had a scoop of vanilla ice cream with 10 peanut M&Ms on each. Molly slept through it. :) I love hearing about your FHE! Keep the posts comin'.

Song: Pioneer Children (with a few extra "walked and walked" phrases thrown in.

Lesson: Chatting about pioneers while looking at the Gospel Art Kit picture of the Saints leaving Nauvoo.

Treats: Smores cookies made by the 3 year old all by himself, with quick in and out of the oven help from Mom. He planned it when we were at the store last week and chose out some of the pre-made kind that you just place on the pan and place in the oven. His face was priceless as he carried the big plate of cookies around to each family member announcing the treat as "Triple's Magical Cookies."

We had a great FHE. Nate got out his Anatomy DVD and had a little lesson on the Birds and the Bee's. I wish I had a recorder out to record Natalie asking questions, she is hilarious. Sam was totally embaressed. Nate told the kids parents like to do this, but only when they are married and Natalie says "you do it when we aren't looking" Alison just kept saying "boys can't have babies" Nate has this great anatomy DVD that takes the body into layers, so you can remove layer, by layer, like skin, blood, organs, etc. Natalie loves to look at it. There is a modesty function that puts fig leaves over the body parts if you are looking at a whole body. Natalie kept asking for the fig leaves to be off and Sam kept asking for them to be on.

I read to our kids from the Feb 2006 Worldwide Leadership Training on "Supporting the Family" (while my husband gave the baby a bottle). :) We talked about what we could each individually do to support and strengthen our family, and then we put this on a posterboard and signed our names to it. I told them I would hang it in the one place ALL of us go EVERY day. They said, "The bathroom?!" and I said, "Nooo! The pantry!" So, there it is. (But we *do* put excerpts from daily scripture study on notecards on the bathroom mirrors!)

We went out to Dairy Queen afterwards for dessert.

Song: When my mother calls me

Lesson: Obedience- The Doc gave a lesson about the "4 Little pigs" (a variation on 3, and named two of the piggies to Emma and Brigham). Today was a hard "listening" and following instructions day, so we tailored the lesson to that.

Treat: Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Good for you guys. We are trying to as well, but not nearly as good...and we don't even have twins! Josh is gone and I actually forgot it was Monday so our family night consisted of me laying on the couch and Zach driving his cars on Mommy and the baby!

Liz, you would be happy to know ..that I remembered your action/words things you would do when we were in primary together to help the kids remember phrases...etc. Last night was on reverence,so we showed pics of kids in the Friend magazine being reverent and talked about how HF likes us to be reverent during prayers and in church too. We probably could be better with the activity part...we usually skip that and go straight to the treat...but we sing at least 3 songs because big L loves singing.

Oh and our action/phrase last night was.."Reverent I will BE!" You fold one arm then the other and bow your head as you say it...I love the look on Joshua's face in this pic by the way...pure joy!

You and your commenters have inspired me. We "try" to do FHE every week, but its not what I would like it to be. Thanks L and everyone for reminding me that FHE is about fun family time and not just about checking a box.

The treat was the best part of our FHE last night -- ice cream with blackberries, peaches, and bananas. We also sang I know that my Redeemer Lives, had show and tell (preschool art), and heard about Abinadi. Fun times.

We sang and sang and sang. I spent FHE driving to Boise (sans Andrew).

Way to go with the sleep training.

(this is Shannon, BTW)

This was our first try at putting the kids in charge of the lesson and activity. Benjamin (very soberly) opened his Bible to a random page and pointed to a scripture for me to read. It happened to be about Jesus calling the 70 and sending them out two by two. So I said it was about missionaries. I asked him how we could be missionaries and said, "You have to live the Gospel."

That was the lesson. Ainsley was in charge of the activity. We hit balloons back and forth in the playroom.

Mede missed the opportunity to say the closing prayer due to a tired-two-year-old meltdown and Katie (with much help from mom) gave everyone popsicles for the treat. :)
