Summer Fruit

Problem: J collected so much candy at last Monday's local Memorial Day parade. He has never known the names of candy to my knowledge, but he's so interested in printed words these days that he had us read the wrappers of each piece--Dum Dums, Nerds, Laffy Taffy, Double Bubble, Bottle Tops, Sweet Tarts. It didn't take too long before I grew tired of doing the candy battle each and everyday. Solution: summer fruit! On Friday, J, the babies, and I walked down to the neighborhood fruit market so that he could choose some fruit. We came home with two pounds of cherries. Candy problem solved. Now I'm just wishing that cherries were as cheap as candy.
While we sat on the lawn and ate our cherries the twins finished out their stroller nap. Aren't their little toes perfect?
J loves produce. I usually let him choose an item in the produce section if he helps me out in the grocery store. I know, I know, I'm not supposed to bribe with food, but you'd be amazed at how much of a reward it is for J to take time smelling fruit and learning the names of exotic vegetables. He just loves it. After examining the unique shape of starfruit and checking the changing color of the avocadoes, he usually chooses these:

And, no, those aren't just "carrots". They're "carrots with tops"--that's what he calls them. He loves to get them, wash them, and lay them across our plates for dinner with the greens draped off to the side. Something about the aesthetics of these carrots in their unadulterated form really appeals to him. Maybe, if I'm lucky, he'll be a produce farmer someday.

So sweet. Hey, if you are going to bribe your kids, I think carrots are a pretty safe way to go!

Love those baby toes!

we use bribing all the time, but not with avocados or starfruit...usually it is chocolate chips or gum, I should take some advice from you!! The twinsies toes are so cute- looks like you are getting out and about!!

Who says you shouldn't bribe kids with fruit or veggies in the grocery store? I certainly haven't found any better place to bribe kids with food. Its certainly the place to get the most bang for you buck!

Crud--my kids like both candy and fruit! I wish I could get them to trade the candy for the carrots . . .

That photograph of your twins' legs and toes is fabulous (as is Joshua in the apron/cape); I love it!

I remember being at my grandmother's house in the 70s and always getting a towel and having my mother tie it around my neck to be a cape. That pic of Joshua takes me back to when I was not much older than he is and did similar things. I guess boys just like superheroes!

Hey you! Your kids are adorable and I can't believe how big Joshua is. You sure have your hands full though with twins! Congrats though. The picture of their feet is adorable. I love how you bribe them with fruit or vegetables. Good job! I've never even thought of that.

We are in South Everett. We are doing well. I am working 1 day a month at the same dentist office in Edmonds where I first started. I was working 1x/week, but after I had my second kid, Preston, I cut way back. It's nice to be home, yet have a chance to keep my foot in the door. Kyle works for a developer in Mill Creek as a project manager.

Hi Liz,
The girls and I are going to spend two weeks in NY. Maybe we can come and swing by to meet in person those cute toes!
I can't remember exactly where you are though. I hope it works out.
Love

Ummmm, bribing with fresh produce isn't bad, it is genius, pure genius. Now he will think of healthy foods as rewards. =)
