Today's Lesson: Learn to Identify Poisonous Plants

Photo A: this is a hosta. Hostas are not poisonous.
Photo B: this is a hosta with poison ivy growing right up through the center. Can you see the three-leaved stems? Notice that some of the leaves have a reddish tint but some don't. In every case poison ivy has one leaf at the end of the stem and two opposite each other.
Photo C: this is unfortunately where that hosta is located. Right outside my front door in my front flower bed!
Photo D: this is what happens to my face when I don't know what I'm pulling out of my hosta plant. Amazingly my hands weren't affected, but my face (from which I wiped my hair and perspiration away) was affected. Notice that I'm not having fun in this picture--those are weepy blisters that itch and burn. So go back to Photo B and take a good look at it, and never ever pull weeds without gloves.

Oh, Liz! I'm sorry! Know how I avoid situations like that? I just don't pull weeds at all! :D I'm amazed that you were out pulling weeds in the first place! Hope you feel better soon!

Oh Liz. That does look so miserable. What a crazy thing. You wouldn't expect poison ivy to be growing out your front door! Get better soon!

Yikes Liz! I'm so sorry. I was going to ask but I just assumed it was leprasy and you would want to keep that in.

I hope it clears up super fast.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. You are awesome to be working in your yard on top of everything you are perfect at! Good luck getting rid of it and surviving the weepy blisters!

liz, that is so sad! I think you should take a day off.
I thought you were girl's camp certified...(as if that really means anything, case in point)

ps. as a funny side note when I took my students to mt. charleston on our field trip, my students kept asking me if various plants were poison ivy. I just sad no. Really...I have NO idea.

pps. I'm serious about that day off thing.

Ouch, I'm soo sorry! I would never have expected it right outside my front door either. Thanks for the lesson -- I know poison ivy grows out here, but I didn't know what to look for.

Whoa! That's crazy! (Glad you missed your eyeballs...)

All of your babies (even the big one who can run around in his cool cape) are beautiful!

Good to chat with you yesterday. I bawled to Merrill last night about not coming home.
