A Few Random Photos from August

I'm so grateful for friends who let me borrow their kids. We had so much fun this week with friends. Here are some of the cute kids who participated in Day 2 of Splashdown 2008 in our small inflatable pool. And what in the world will we all do when watermelon isn't in season anymore? Here's a pretty acurate shot of what A and E are doing everyday--they're moving and shaking. Several times a day I put them down right next to each other. A automatically locates the closest book and army-crawls or rolls or does whatever it takes to get there--she's my mover. E wants to lay in one spot while he sings and dances, thumping his feet on the floor--he's my shaker.
The boys worked hard today. D applied waterseal to the porch and J tagged the front walkway with sidewalk chalk.
As for me, I've decided to take some classes. I'm designing the courses myself. As I go. OK, so they're not "real" classes but I'm enjoying the reading and the projects. Here's one of my courses: Landscape Design. My favorite text presently is The Welcoming Garden by Gordon Hayward. It's so good. Today D sent me away from the house for some "personal time" so I went to look at plants at a local nursery. Here's one I wouldn't mind having along my front walk--Japanese maples are so touchable.
Anyone want to learn with me? We could have phone conferences about things I know little about like principles of design and drip systems and xeriscaping.

Hi Liz. I would love to learn about landscaping with you but I probably won't be very dedicated until I have a yard. If you do a course on container gardening, though, let me know. I might have a book to add to your reading list though: Sarah Stein's Noah's Garden. I haven't even looked at the cover of the book, but I've read a good chunk of another book of hers (Noah's Children)-- I had to return it to the library before I finished it-- and I really liked it and based on what I know about her from reading that, I think Noah's Garden might at least be worth looking into.

I still haven't sent you pics of the bushes I think will work for your front. We have a Japanese Maple and I LOVE it. It's a great hiding place for the kids. It would look really pretty in your yard too!

I've been thinking a lot about gardens too and what I'd like in one (when I get a house of course). Now it looks like we'll be going to Vegas, so I'm going to have to scrap my plans and learn about xeriscaping...so any info you have on that would be great:)

I love reading about your summer days with those "movers" and "shakers"! The children are darling!

by the way, I think that "read a book" is a great goal for the month of August. Something realistic. Then...if you get to the end of the month & all you've read is "Good Night Moon" a few dozen time, good news...you reached your goal!
