An FHE Committment and a Few Flashbacks

Doing a little FHE cheer.  Sort of.
We love Family Home Evening.  When we are on the ball we have it on Monday night and it consists of a gospel lesson, a fun activity, and a treat.  When were are not on the ball or when we have a "rain delay" (ex:  toddler meltdowns, an emergency, or too late of a start), we push it to Tuesday night.  That was the case this week.

Tonight we had a standard treat (cake made by me) and lesson (taught by J), but the highlight of of the ten-minute time span was the "Get Goliath" game that D led.  To play the game D would ask the kids a question related to the lesson (but you could ask them anything) and if they got it right they would get one large marshmallow to sling at him, trying to hit him on the head of course.  Our children were squealing, jumping, laughing.  That one is a crowd pleaser for sure.

This blog is a family-history-in-the-making, so it makes sense I should post more about this anticipated event in our home.  I'm going to post about our FHE successes and I'll include the bloopers, too.  Tonight I kick it off with a flashback of a few FHEs over the past year.

Last year right after Christmas D taught a lesson on gratitude and then we staged photos of our family enjoying our gifts to send to the gift givers.
Lest you think it went perfectly, here's evidence of the monkey-jumping that ensued.
In February for one activity we drew sketches of D's banjo.  J was very serious about the task.   He is a budding artist.
D couldn't take the assignment too seriously.
In August the monthly message from the prophets of our church was about Temples.  We used the child-friendly suggestions for the lesson and I taught the principles of the lesson while everyone colored the handout.  Everyone was remarkably quiet--E was focused on peeling the paper off the crayons, A had discovered a pink marker, and J was speeding through the task so that he could have a treat.
And then he begged me to take silly pictures.
Tell me what you do.  Come here on Mondays (or Tuesdays) and tell me what you did.  Or post on your blog about your highlights or even just an image of your FHE and include a link in the comment section.  I love re-using other families' ideas.

first of all, your boys are so adorable! oh my goodness!

secondly, thank you again and again for your wonderful comment on my blog! it was encouraging to have a former portuguese-speaking missionary tell me to simply relax and the words will come, because of course you've been there :) and you are right - when i don't think so hard, it's much easier! ha!

and finally, i'd love to meet up with your friend somehow! i love any and all contacts i can have in brasil. i want to visit sao paulo soon as well! my email is juliannerose@gmail.com. it would be oh so appreciated. knowing no one in brasil before i came, i'm snatching up anyone i possibly can! :)

again, many many thanks for your kind words and encouragement!

all the best
julianne.

Just want you to know how much I always appreciate your blog updates. Being an absentee Grandma is hard, but this makes it a little easier. I'm sure your mom feels the same way. I love seeing how and what you're all doing.

I love that you're using your blog as a family history tool (us too) and a tool to help others with FHE! I look forward to hearing what your wonderful family does! Our FHE topics are variable and based on what is interesting to our kids at the moment - otherwise their attention may dwindle. We tend to use a lot of active play like charades, experiments, etc.

I love "rain delays." We have those too. It's a good way to put it...it's not failure, just a delay. We have a similar Goliath lesson that we do almost every other week by popular demand. You have some great ideas. I love it!

Thank you!! what a great post.
We have been getting more and more into FHE, we really enjoy our time together, but I had the idea that you were supposed to only talk about Doctrine ( being a convert in SA can seriously confuse you sometimes) so it has been hard to teach SO much to the girls and still make it fun.
But yours sound like it can be about everything!
I'm excited to learn more.
Thanks ;-)
