Two weeks ago this tree we pass frequently was perfectly adorned in crimson leaves with only a few hints of green on the lower bows. The very next day as we were stopped at the stoplight I noticed that over half of the leaves had dropped. I suppose I love fall for some of that drama--leaves there one day, gone the next. So before autumn passes me by altogether, I thought
I'd start writing down some of my thoughts on my favorite season and how
it effects our family.
1. I love that at the University of Washington instead of "Fall Semester" it's called "Autumn Semester". That's been on my mind for ten years or so. How many other school also use that label?
2. D and I decided that if we ever purchase a home again we will not do it in the fall, because every home looks so cozy and surrounded by color. In fact everything seems more beautiful in the fall.
3. The whole changing of the colors on the trees is a miraculous process. Last week I was reading this book to some kids and in addition to so many amazing facts about the botanical processes involved, the very last page addressed how many of our senses are engaged when we play in fallen leaves. I realized how much I need to get my kids outside in the leaves before the cold comes. As a result, we have spent hours outside this week everyday playing in the leaves.
4. The lead-up to Halloween has included new activities this year that have really improved the fun part of Halloween. One friend introduced me to the idea of the Switch Witch (whose services we will definitely employ this year), we've been reading really cute Halloween books that you must also read, and I'm really looking forward to knocking on all my neighbors doors on Monday night with my cute kids.
5. This year our leaves will be our winter mulch. I know it's not pretty to mulch your beds with leaves, but this year I don't care. Every single gardening professional I've ever met has recommended to do this. It makes no sense to send away all that beautiful soil-enriching, plant-protecting useful material in bags.
Tell me this: do you have any favorite things about the fall or Halloween?

Hey! I recognize two of those books. Classics in our home growing up. I'll have to see if Amazon has them (silly comment. Amazon has everything, right) & add them to my collection.
Some day we'll have to live somewhere that actually has fall. One down side to SoCal life...
Thank you for those book suggestions. I ordered a few Halloween books from Amazon and they aren't too awesome. I will check yours out. Have you ever read Mousekin's Golden House? I think you would love it, the illustrations are gorgeous the kids have all enjoyed it. You will have to get it from the library though...unless you want to pay hundreds since it is out of print. And the leaf mulching thing...I am SO doing that. I think we do sort of anyways, because we never fully get them out behind the bushes before the snow falls.
And about your comment on Abbey's crew...you are spot on...I could tell story after story of really really good (sometimes hard) lessons learned during one crew season. I loved it all because she gained so much confidence in all of those aspects.
My daughter told me today she calls fall "autumn". Ha! Love all the beautiful leaves and colors, especially the pictures on your blog from your hikes. Beautiful trees in Virginia!
I've been wishing someone somewhere would suggest some Halloween books! Thank you! I've struck out with the last few I ordered. I'm going to try all three. Love you Liz!
