The kids and I made a surprise trip to Dulles Airport yesterday to pick up my mom! As our Christmas gift she flew here to visit for a week--we kept it a secret from the kids right up until we loaded up to go to the airport. As a reward for their endurance in the car we stopped at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian located next to Dulles International.
We had this massive place to ourselves from 4:30 to 5:30 (and we didn't have to pay parking!) J has been such a fan of aeronautical engineering since he was four, so this is always a treat. The SR-71 is is favorite, but the Space Shuttle Discovery (just behind it in the photo) takes a close second. I think we could have all spent the whole day there observing the evolution of flight technology.
Deborah, Mom said at least three times "Oh, Deborah and Eric just have to bring their kids here." I was thinking that if you only had a day you could fly into Dulles, we'd take you to this museum, then take you back to Dulles to fly home. What do you say?
And as a sidenote, I am amazed at how everything fits into to those giant flight bunkers, how the lighting makes everything look so colorful and interesting, and how the angles of the roof supports create the most attractive geometric texture. I love how museums offer a sense of organization and aesthetics in addition to the knowledge they intend to transfer.

How about a shout out for your great photos! Nice job, Liz. I'm so glad you're doing a good job documenting our family history. If you left the job to me, we'd have only stains on our carpet and debris from broken household items to show for our children's lives. Now we have stains, debris, and pictures.
I say that if we only had a day to be with you, we'd take it. But there's no way we'd only spend a day . . . way, way too short.
P.S. Dan is so funny. And funny in a "Liz will think that's REALLY funny" really funny way. Dan=Liz funny. I knew this even when you were traipsing around Puerto. And Dan's comment made me remember.
