The Levee of a Virginia River Town

After a fun morning of activities and spontaneous early afternoon naps, we packed water bottles and a guidebook of the area and drove to nearby Scottsville, a small town on the James River just to our south. We were improvising and it worked out.
Scottsville, situated on a big horseshoe bend on the James River, has seen its share of flooding. Reminders of the devastation are painted on walls and historic markers.

I love this plaque "to remind all who read it of the vulnerability of mortal man to the elements and of the indomitable spirit of men who work together to rebuild.1971."
We stumbled upon a letterbox by the packet boat in the park. I think a new Player family hobby has been born. The kids were so intrigued.

We paused for Subway sandwiches, picked up some frosting-with-cupcakes and returned to the levee to get a better view of the river and enjoy the amazing blue sky of the evening.
A levee walk seems like a perfect activity when visiting a place with a history of flooding devastation.
We happened to be there when the train rolled through town. We told the kids how as newlyweds in Seattle we loved visiting Carkeek Park and standing on the bridge over the tracks. They did a little train dance and we waited to see the caboose pass.
Our drive home was stunning. Isn't Virginia beautiful? Couldn't I write that at the end of every post I make?

Love all your posts even though I don't always comment. I have a question though. What is a letterbox? Is it like a geo-caching thing?
