Shoulder to Shoulder

This week after many moons of preparation I watched girls in gray, our youth camp leaders, as they led a camp of one hundred through activities and skits and meals and devotionals. It will be one of the highlights of Summer 2013 for me.

The YCLs had been involved in the planning from the beginning and I wondered how invested sixteen and seventeen year-olds could actually be in a program in which they had to focus on other younger campers for an entire week. We brought them a day earlier than the younger campers to train them and finalize plans. I had no idea how capable they actually were. I truly don't worry about the future when I realize that these girls will be leading it.
I could list off dozens of highlights from the week, but the thing I loved most was supporting these girls as they learned to lead on the job. When I was their age my camp experiences were completely adult-led. Those days are over, it is better this way. We adults were still in the background filling in blanks, providing needed resources, and keeping things organized to keep everyone happy (and satisfied at meal time), but it was inspiring to be shoulder to shoulder with such capable young women.

What an incredible experience! For the nearly 20 years (!) I have been out of YW, I have mainly had RS callings (which I have loved!), except for a short stint in for 18 months in a Primary Presidency (that ended when we moved). One of these days I would love to serve with the youth. This sounds like such an amazing experience! Your girls are blessed to have you in their life as a shining example!

Hurray for girls camp! I want to hear more. Please tell me more posts are on their way. Isn't it so fun to think about the days when you'll go with A? The best years are yet to come!!!
