Joshua and I ventured across the span of the country for a week with my parents in the golden valley of Central California. (Out-of-staters would call it "brown" but John Muir and others saw it as "golden.") Joshua was amazing on the plane in spite of my nausea and long conversations with fellow travellers. (That's for a future post.) And it was all worth it. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for flying us out to see you. Here are some memories Joshua made:

Day 2: Joshua joined Grandpa and Nana on their Friday night date to a favorite family Mexican restaurant without me. (I would have loved to have gone but I couldn't keep any food down that day.) Joshua filled up on chips--surprise, surprise.

Day 3: Here's a sampling of what's growing in my dad's orchard. Joshua loved harvesting and eating all of the fruits in season--grapes, peaches,
pluots, apples, a nectarine. He'll tell you that he's not a big fan of the figs.

Day 5: This is what Joshua looks like with a hose in his hands. Beware! He has been telling me the story of how he soaked Nana ever since we left yesterday morning. He might love being out in the sun with water as much as Nana loves it. They would have preferred a trip to Santa Cruz--next time.

Day 4: An ice cream break just before bedtime probably isn't my idea of "winding down" but when we're at Grandpa's house, we eat his ice cream. This is Joshua's cousin Jacob, my sister Deborah's little boy. He is as cute as they come, and he loves ice cream. The third word Jacob acquired in his spoken vocabulary was "vanilla". The fourth word he ever learned? "Chocolate." Do you think that has to do with the fact he lives less than two hours from my dad?

Day 6: Doing the farm chores with Grandpa became the highlight of each evening for Joshua. Here are the boys washing the eggs outside after collecting them from the
hen house. Joshua was a pro with this routine. In fact, one night he walked me through it step by step telling me how Grandpa taught him to do everything. It was cute. And Jacob was Joshua's little shadow so he wasn't about to be left out of the fun.

Umm, can we plan that for OUR next vacation? It looks like a blast!
Ok Liz. You'd think I'd hear about all the awesome things your guys did whilst in class with Josh. Nope...just that it takes ALL DAY LONG to get to California. "No, Sister Meyerson, it takes one whole day. That's a long time."
