Girls Camp

Those of you who know me pretty well probably know that I love Girls Camp and I try to get involved in whatever way I can. This last spring I was asked to be in charge of the fourth-year campers' certification and I excitedly accepted. We backpacked in the pre-camp hike in June and then pregnancy set it and, days before camp, it became evident that I would be no fun at camp. Enter my friends Cydney and Kristin--they saved the day, filling in for me and being the fun leaders I couldn't be. Thanks, girls! I owe ya big.

I did get to go up one day--yay! I went up to finish getting the girls ready for their presentation on the Book of Mormon (which was so great) and then I stayed for the ward testimony meetings. I am so lucky to have been with them for the short time that I had.

Pardon my musings, but I made a big realization last night at our testimony meeting. There's a lot of poking fun at how much love there is going around at girls camp and the testimonies frequently become expressions of gratitude and love for each other. What an important role girls camp has in helping girls feel loved--that is such a teenage girl issue, feeling loved, I mean. And if the only thing that camp does is to help a girl feel the really wholesome love of living the gospel together then that's great. Once they feel those real-life loving relationships, it'll be easier to understand the Savior's love for them and Heavenly Father's love for them. It's all worth it.

One of my greatest "paydays" is that my girls love GIRLS CAMP! And want to share your love by serving there.

Do you remember girls who would tearfully share: "I come to camp and have friends. I don't at school". I remember Ruth Rogers and wonder how she is doing.

I have such fond memories of my own girls camp experiences. Like you said, feeling loved is such a wonderful skill to learn. People really should never poke fun at someone else's testimony.

I'm so glad you got to go to girls camp for at least a day. What a great time and special experience for those girls.
