Dan has gotten me hooked on the NY Times. He's always sending me fantastic articles to read, so I decided to sign up for their "Today's Headlines" e-mail and I'm enjoying the challenge of staying informed. I think I'll start linking you to my favorite article every now and then.
Today's is about correlations (or the lack thereof) between bad behavior and academic performance. The Times focuses on two articles that have been published in journals recently about student behavior. Check out the article by clicking here.
This is my favorite quote: “'I think these may become landmark findings, forcing us to ask whether these acting-out kinds of problems are secondary to the inappropriate maturity expectations that some educators place on young children as soon as they enter classrooms,' said Sharon Landesman Ramey, director of the Georgetown University Center on Health and Education."
In my former life, I dealt mainly with kids who were frustrated learners. They could read just fine, but most of them were delayed in reading in comparison with their classmates because of some hang-up they had early on. Sometimes I think we're so ready to force our expectations on kids that they end up paying for the ill effects of our anxieties. Just something to think about.
