How He's Doing--March

Many have asked me how J is doing, so this is my attempt to report in on his status. This has been such a memorable time for him. Not only is a big brother now, but he's lost his status as king of the hill (a.k.a. "only child").

For the most part he loves A and E. He'd tell you that he likes E more--E's a boy and he knows that someday they'll probably share his bunkbed. E cries less, and I think that explains his preference in part. He tries to interact with both equally. He's been so helpful to me in grabbing diapers or burpcloths, and he frequently tries to engage them in play. The other day he informed me that he could play catch with them--this is what he showed me. A was definitely looking at that Koosh.
Other times aren't so easy for him. Feeding time for the babies are really hard when I'm here by myself. We've read his Calvin and Hobbes comic book at least three times front to back--I save this just for feeding so there's some anticipation. We've figured out that if we can get something to seem like his idea he buys into, but this can't always work. So sometimes I have to make normal care tasks seem pleasurable to him in some way. Here's what bathtime for the babies has turned into for him--water therapy.

Anyone have any other great ideas for making babycare pleasurable for a four-year old?

Josh kills me. Looks like what you have is going well. I love the catch with the Koosh. The babies are just so precious and they are lucky to have such a fun big bro. He's always thinking, isn't he?

Wow Liz, I'm sure his world has been turned completely upside down but that's just what happens and it's a wonderful time for him and he's learning great lessons about life through learning how to be part of this bigger loving family. I can't imagine there's anything I could say that could help. It looks like he's doing great and soon enough those babies will be crawling after the Koosh balls he throws for them! I am loving that you read Calvin and Hobbes! I have all the books but they're at my parents house still. I should get them back, huh!

You're such a creative mom! All I can suggest is that the Magic Treehouse chapter books are saving my life. Short Chapters and I have Ty begging to hear the next one and the next!
Keep up the good work!

oh liz..feeding time with 2 is so crazy I bet...it was very hard to distract lewis when I was feeding char, but you are doing the right things, I had special toys or puzzles he could play with only during feeding time..or you can resort to the good old tv...we need to chat soon!

I had to laugh at the Calvin and Hobbes. My Joshua loves to read those too. I wish we were still there and we could let you borrow all of them! We miss you. Good luck with everything!

I know what you are going through, although I only had to feed one! Blake's favorite "feeding time" game was "I Spy." I sometimes had to switch rooms throughout the day, but he loved spying the littlest things. Another thing that he loved was books on CD--the ones with the page-turn signals. Have your remote handy though 'cause he'd sometimes listen to them 3 times in a row. Some of his faves: Junie B. Jones books, and the Berenstein Bears. Keep it up! You're awesome!

No ideas, but I love yours. Although I am not having twins, I am worried about Grace and David (mostly David)when our baby gets here. Keep the good ideas coming. You are such an amazing mom.

In response to your question: yes, we moved from the greenwood ward to the 7th ward and lived there for a year and a half. We even lived in (and managed) the same complex that the Kohagens lived in. Crazy, huh?! It's funny how many people I have met that somehow go back to the 7th ward...

Seems like you're doing a great job! I hope Clare does as well as Joshua is doing.

I get away with "your baby is hungry too, why don't you feed her?" But I guess it won't work with boys as much as with girls.
We eat lettuce almost everyday and I sit Elena on her high chair, hand her a clean head of romaine and make her tear them down for me into a bowl. She is also supposed to towel dry every leaf. That buys me about 20 minutes ;-)
