My cute J is seven. I was looking at his body all stretched out on the floor several days ago and my mind's eye flashed back to his first birthday when he was a compact little tornado full of giggles and growls. He had a mouthful of dinosaur teeth and he grinned a lot.
He still has his dimples when I catch him in a spontaneous smile, but I'm wondering, is Seven when they just can't pull off a normal expression in photos? I didn't even have him take school photos this year because he was so stressed about smiling right. And when we practiced he really couldn't smile normally! Here are a few of his faces.
Portrait 1: Mid-bite. We kicked things off with apple pie for breakfast--I'm fairly certain that all of his other breakfast requests were equally unhealthy, so we went with it. He is so full of great ideas and requests.
Portrait 2: Success. His birthday wish may or may not have been that someday he'll get into BYU. I wouldn't want to risk the chance of it not coming true. He's a future Cougar at heart, and he naturally aspires to lofty goals.
Portrait 3: So smug. Here he is with the fruits of his Lego Day labor. He spent nearly thirteen hours on Saturday and Sunday creating Lego vehicles. He is an Lego engineer extraordinaire, a tinkerer in every way.

What in the world?!?! Really? He's SEVEN! I could have sworn he was only six...which makes me birthday message on your machine all the better when I said, "surely you're not seven!!!!"...BUT HE IS!
I'm so impressed with that boys of yours.
*make that "boy" of yours.
Although I do love little E, too.
Not to mention A.
Happy Birthday Joshua. We were thinking of you on your big day, I don't know why we never made the call. The boys are looking forward to spending time with you this summer! We'll be sure to get some Lego building time in. Sam loves them too, his dresser is filled with different space crafts, cars, and transports. We sure do love you!
Happy birthday!!!
I would take those faces over any well pose smile, they are him and he is AWESOME!!
Elena is drooling over his Lego creation, she needs master "J"oda to come and teach her :-)
happy birthday to J!! He and Lewis would build legos for HOURS, wish we lived closer and could witness, looks like a fun birthday!
My seven year old can't smile either, which is sad because she's the only cooperative one when it comes to pictures. I love all J's expressions though -- 7 was kind of a big shock for me because I keep thinking "she's almost 8!" I know, it's really not for a while, but it's sneaking up a lot faster than I thought it could!
