Happy Birthday to Grandpas

This is the month of the Grandpas' birthdays--both of them were born in November.  Unfortunately they are both a few thousand miles away.  We decided to party anyway.  Tonight we enjoyed cake while we shared trivia with the kids about their granddads.  We only had one candle, a 6, so we used it and blew it out at the appropriate time.

Dan and I were fortunate to be raised by such good men.  They both are such hardworkers and so gentle with their families.  Here's some of the trivia that came out of this celebration:

As a young boy Dan's dad fell jumped off a barn and broke his arm.  (He was being disobedient by being up there in the first place, but he was getting in one last jump.)  He once had a guitar that the hog somehow got to and ate.  He was employed as the school busdriver in high school.  He is the reason that D and I ever met, even though he didn't meet me until nearly two and a half years after I met Dan.  (OK, so we didn't tell the kids that, but it's true.)

My dad had his own paper route for many years.  He once worked for the irrigation district  doing something with bugs.  He had, for a time, planned to get his masters degree in entymology.  His interests have really shaped our family identity:  work days, orchards, and chickens are just some of them.
Happy birthday, Grandpa B and Grandpa P!  Tonight we were thinking of you and we look forward to learning more trivia and doing this again.
