Second Grade Showcase

We attended J's school open house as a family a couple weeks ago.  He excels in every way as a second grader and his comfort and confidence in that environment is evident.  As we entered the class room we passed the display of science projects, booklets created by each student on states of matter.  The cover of his reads "The Super Book of Awesome Matter" and there are notes reading "Warning:  Awesome" and "Note:  This book could be too awesome for you."  Thinking back I never have had a single concern about his confidence in himself.

I get to volunteer in his class once a week, and so I feel familiar with routines and class climate, but listening to him explain things to his younger siblings is so enjoyable on these occasions.  A soaked in every word J had to say--she already asks when she'll get to go to school.
J's favorite area of study is math, but he sails right through chapter books and he talked about economics constantly when they did their basic econ unit.  It is so hard to know what his main strength is and my approach is to just encourage him to enjoy the hard work of learning. There is a budding engineer in him that I'd love to nurture and I think we're going to finally start him with music lessons.
I was just thinking about the blessing it is to have had so many positive experiences at his elementary school. We played math games, visited his research project on display in the library, met his math teacher, stopped by the art room, and bumped into friends and neighbors.

Ah..this is so great. Thanks so much for posting. J sounds like the perfect student (much like his Mama was). It must warm your heart that he enjoys school so much :)

Ha! I loved this. Love his little comments and warnings. Your photo at the top is gorgeous, too.
