Parade-watching is one of my all-time favorite things to do on the Fourth of July, even in a heat wave. We chose a parade in nearby Earlysville because we heard about the free hot dogs offered at this charming 250 year old church. Every year they barbecue hot dogs for families and set up a bounce house for the small children. I am so inspired by their community spirit.
I loved their chalkboard sign for the occasion. Each time I looked at it I got a little teary--it was like a little Independence Day prayer right there on the roadside. And I chuckled a little, too, because I thought "how sneaky and determined of them to make sure that we don't forget God on this holiday." I spent a few minutes mentally brainstorming how I can do better at making sure that He is a part of all special days.
Firetrucks tossed candy and politicians handed out water and we enjoyed time chatting with our friends.
That night we barbecued with those same friends and a few other families and then watched the local fireworks display at a nearby park to finish the day off. I hope all Fourth of July celebrations are this great.

The 'good ol' fashioned' sort of day.
