A Simplified Halloween Our Way

This year the kids chose their costumes from things that we had on hand. Yesterday. Amelia wore a tutu and wings as a fairy. Eli was was a police officer (and he forgot to clip on a tie last minute and didn't even notice.) Joshua was an explorer and wore all the gear that makes him feel tough when we're hiking. Dan and I didn't dress up and I didn't feel guilty. Everybody was happy.
We attended the ward trunk-or-treat which was moved inside due to the rain. I'm not a huge fan of the trunk-or-treat concept, but I took my pot of vegetarian chili and my door decorations (paper bat silhouettes that have been hanging by thread from our dining room ceiling for two weeks), and I think we all really enjoyed ourselves. I would never want my kids to insecurely hold back their natural excitement because of my hesitance to load up my kids and other children with sugar. Plus, I really would love to enjoy it more, and we can't love something we criticize.
Tonight we went trick-or-treating just on our street so that I could learn the names of my neighbors (again since forgetting them last year) and introduce our kids to them. For the great climate that our neighborhood offers we sure don't talk to each other much. This is the one night of the year when I can tell them my name and ask them theirs in a really natural way. This year I got smart and took a pen and paper and wrote down everyone's name for a neighborhood map we'll make for our wall. I love that we can emphasize the importance of our neighborhood on Halloween.
Tomorrow night (the first night of November) the Switch Witch comes. This year she's offering trading cards for excess candy for her candy castle (did you hear?), and my kids are seeking her swap service. Every year Halloween comes and goes, and, with everything that I've slowly learned to appreciate, I'm still never sad to see it go. On to November!

I love how you have found a way to embrace the Halloween holiday without compromising who you are! We went with already-at-home costumes this year, too.

Thanks for always inspiring me and encouraging me to be a better person :) !!

I love your idea of the swap!
We divide the lot and put them in little sandwich bags, then go out and hand them to the workers around our compound.
The girls really enjoy doing it because they know that the workers don't use their little income for candy, they send it all home to their families, so they can instantly tell that they are giving someone a treat.

You should come to our house for Halloween! I have enthusiasm for two families and you could mooch. We love Halloween since it's wrapped up in celebrating M's birthday. A perfect reason for silly dress up and funny decorations. I don't go for the creepy, yucky, gory Halloween, but I do all out for birthday fun. We all dress up around here, multiple times. For one party I was a mouse, for another, a witch. D was a cat for one and a cow for another. M was a superhero and then a dinosaur. We had people over for soup and cake and a treasure hunt and trick or treating. See? Come here! Come play!
