Like the kissing ball in the English house.
And the Irish Forge.
Today we watched him make a hook and a nail in minutes.
The warmth of these homes with their ever-burning hearthfires.
On our last visit we ducked into the houses to take advantage of their shade and coolness. This time we slipped into each home, latched the door behind us, and we found the fire as soon as possible!

The fascinating demonstration of how flax becomes cloth in the Irish house.
The teeny-tiny windowless Log House.
We also made the drive to Lexington, on of our favorite Virginia college towns so that we could walk its streets. Not much new discovery was made in this little town due to a concerted effort to keep the kids moving along, but it was an enjoyable, crisp, lovely afternoon for in spite of that.
