USRT13 Part One
We have had an unforgettable two weeks of driving across this beautiful country. I have been grateful for a functioning, air-conditioned car. Grateful for saved vacation time. Grateful for a family that has handled the trip with patience and a good sense of humor. Grateful for Dan who has driven the entire way. Grateful for a camera to help us maintain our memories of these days together. Early on in the trip wanting to document the intriguing, changing landscape I started snapping photos out the window as we drove. This is the first blog post in a series of posts about our US Road Trip 2013.
Virginia, the beautiful. I love this green state.
West Virginia with its steep treed mountains.
Kentucky with tree-covered hills and fenced-off horse farms.
I must have slept through Indiana, but it was sometime around then that things started really flattening out for awhile, or at least then next three states.
This is Illinois, where we camped on our first night just after our first beautiful sunset of the trip.
Missouri! It was here that we picked Route 66 which we would take through California.
We went through our first rainstorm near Joplin.
Oklahoma is much more than I expected it to be. The grassy, golden and green rise and fall of Oklahoma terrain mixes with lakes, ponds, and rivers. The sky is gigantic.
I forgot Texas. For being the giant state that it is, we drove through the flat, narrow part up top. Did I mention it was flat?
The deserts of New Mexico and Arizona captivated us until we hit California. Flat mesas. Layers of color. Unique juniper and cacti. Sandstone in angular and rounded formations.
We entered California in mid-Mojave. At this point I started really missing Virginia's lush, leafy landscape.
Thankfully, California is giant. And driving north in Central California showcases my favorite views of the state. This is Steinbeck's California.
Halfway between north and south we stopped for several days of family fun. My family reunion was a great break from the traveling, but after four days we were back in the car.
By Redding, California is covered in conifers and Mt. Shasta dominates the view out the window just before entering Oregon.
