U.S Road Trip 2013
Part Eleven
This story is short. After painfully parting with our California family, we drove north into Oregon heading for our camping destination halfway between my parent's house and D's parents' house. Crater Lake National Park seemed like the logical spot, but the Universe had other plans. Instead of seeing the lake's trademark blue waters we barely saw anything at all. Smoke from nearby forest fires had floated in and sunken right into the lake. We could see the outline of Wizard Island and a vague shadow of the surface of the water, and that was it.
We were left to appreciate Crater Lake for a few its remaining virtues--the rocking chairs on the veranda at the Lodge, its cool mountain temperature, and its population of peculiar half-bare trees.
It took D all of five minutes to convince me that we should drive through the night to surprise his parents with an early-morning arrival in Eastern Washington. We broke camp, packed our car, put our kids in pajamas for the overnight drive, and left before it was dark. It was good to move through the disappointment of a failed plan quickly.
I saw this little gem on the way out, sharpie-d onto the front of graffitti-covered VW bus.
