Still Winter

I am in the weird in-between state of wishing winter away and enjoying the chill in the air that necessitates movement outdoors. We have gone through both spells of being snowed in and wearing ourselves out until we were wet and cold.

One day in the bright indirect winter afternoon sun at the lunch table we started talking about how pale we are and we had to figure out whose eyelids were most transparent. Eli wins that one, which is strange because he browns up so quickly in the summer.
One day we enjoyed our friends' sled run and jumps to the side of their house. Well, who are we kidding. The kids enjoyed it while I caught up on good conversation with the other mom who was also weary of being stuck inside.

One perk to living in a shady part of a tree-covered cul-de-sac cut out of the woods is that our snow melts slowest, so even a week after the twelve inch snow I was still emerging from my house to see my kids in full snow gear in the snow.
Digging burrows for squirrels, she said. I didn't mention I haven' seen squirrels in many months.
Ten days after the snowstorm, the pile left by the snowplows in front of our house looked like this. Digging tools are kept at the ready just next to the house and all three kids are getting awesome full-body exercise moving the frozen stuff. It's like disappearing sand that doesn't get in their clothes and all over the house. How can I complain? Next year I will definitely flag down the snowplow pointing to the front of my house: "put the giant pile here!"
