Cape H Adventures 2014: Camping

In the absence of an epic summer road trip this, we took our family to Cape Hatteras National Seashore this past weekend.  Camping by the beach seemed like a good challenge to master and a fun adventure, too. We set up camp in the dunes of Frisco Campground at the very southern most end of Hatteras Island.
The challenges of the adventure:
Mosquitos
Full exposure to sun
Heat
The need to constantly apply things to deal with the aforementioned annoyances.
A downpour of rain at 2 a.m when our rain fly was in the car
(even though their was a zero-percent chance of precipitation)
Soaking wet sleeping bags and pajamas and a two-inch puddle following that excitement
Humidity
Sand
Trucks on the beach
Cacti in the dunes
Crazy-sharp burrs in the sea grass
The AWESOMENESS of the adventure:
Being all together after Dan had been away for several days
A seven minute walk over the dunes to the beach
Perfect temperatures of water and air
Cold showers in the campground
(I never thought I could love cold showers like I did at Frisco.
I could have showered three times a day.)
Beautiful, calm water
Amazing skies
A sky full of super-bright stars
Dolphins in the waves
Ghost crab walks after dark
The company of a good friend
HOT sun to dry out a rain-soaked camp after a downpour
Church just over an hour away in Nags Head
A great Sunday drive along the beautiful Cape
Nature's sand textures
Unlimited options for unstructured fun
Unending supply of shells
Endless waves to jump
Sunrises and sunsets

The adventure rating: we will go back.
The only question is when.
(Eventually I'll add some tips here for my future self and for the people who might want to attempt the same trip, and I'll post soon about the other cool Outer Banks spots we visited.)

We were at the beach last weekend and saw dolphins playing in the surf. It speaks to my poetic soul; sisters, dolphin watching on different coasts in different oceans.

I want to be a mom like you when I grow up. The only problem is that by the time I get there, my kids will be grown. I guess I'll have to be an adventurous grandma instead. :)
