The wind was going at a steady nine miles per hour, but the sun was so hot on that harsh sand. We took our shoes off and then put them on again, not knowing how to deal with the heat.
J was suddenly inspired by the starkness of the sand and ran out in front of everyone to enact a scene like you might see on Tatooine, the sand planet in Star Wars. It ended with him falling onto his knees and then into the sand.
A found a little shade and then got distracted by the fluidity of the sand in her fingers, and then we all pushed forward up the largest dune. It was a Sunday walk unlike any other I have been on in recent memory.
When it was too hot and I knew we couldn't make it much longer due to our limited water, we headed back, but not before having a how-much-sand-do-you-have-in-your-sandals contest.
And the winner was . . .
On our way out of town the next afternoon we stopped by the Wright Brothers Memorial next door in Kill Devil Hills to admire theirs and other contributions made in the science of human flight. We've done this before, but visiting the sand dunes gave us a better idea of what an undeveloped Outer Banks might have been like.
