We made sure to show her a little Virginia we have learned to love--Williamsburg! Back to the Governors Palace.
J has taken up awesome face making. I am open to this new hobby as long as I can capture his freckles. I think I am in love with them.
Also, I noticed the carpets this time around.
We can't forget to not manure on the streets of the colonial capital. The kids kept mentioning it and I realized how far removed they are from the life of livestock I knew as a child in rural California.
The majesty of this Capitol is probably more impressive to me than the Palace. How people create government from nothing is a miracle to me.
We toured a few buildings, stopped for refreshments, and then A announced that she wanted to "join the militia". They practiced right there on the Duke of Gloucester street, the sergeant yelling orders and Amelia standing at attention and marching in perfect time.
She made friends with a cute girl in colonial costume, holding hands and sharing their names as they walked to the parade grounds.
General George Washington showed up. The fife and drum corps are my favorite, but I love how he nobly gallops into the crowd to rally support for the cause. Before mom left we took her to see James Madison's Montpelier. We had seen an actor portray him the day before, and so seeing his home seemed to put his words into perspective.
I love showing people these favorite places of ours. The tours never get old and the people in the stories remain fascinating and admirable.
