Several months ago I took about twenty pictures to document E's attempts to master the tape dispenser.

Do you remember your first attempts to break off a tiny piece of tape? I remember.

His persistence was intriguing, so I just kept clicking.

And it struck me that sometimes the one way to get good at something is to jump in a make a mess for awhile.

That same lesson returns to my mind when I discover A with her "zoo-zoos". She leaves confetti at all of her "practice" locations.

J's salt dough practice is equally messy, but I think he really has a talent with his hands so I'm rolling with it.

Practice makes a perfect mess. Or maybe perfect practice makes a mess. I'm pretty sure that's how the saying goes.

Remember Karen Potter had the sign in her piano room (where she gave lessons) that said "Practice Makes Permanent"? It said it about 20 times. The first 19 had spelling errors of some sort, but the last one was correct. That always stuck with me.
What perfect little messes they are making.
Your kids have a very define "concentrating" look :-)
Your posts always leave me feeling nostalgic and wishing blogging was around 24 years ago. That tape dispenser series....!!!!!! Love it.
These are wonderful pictures. I just love the "day in the life of" pictures that you post :) Fantastic!
I love his look of concentration and determination!!! You are a great mom for letting your kids make the necessary messes :) Good idea to get dough made for little boys. My little boy has been getting bored lately and that is the perfect remedy!
PS. I like your new format. And, great big pictures. Do you use photobucket or something else? I use photobucket but wonder if there is something easier.
I like the new layout. It somehow makes the pictures bigger.
It is so much fun watching children learn new tasks with such determination. Marilyn gets really focused, determined (and often frustrated) trying new tasks as well--like buckling her high chair belt or wrapping her baby in a burrito fold.
great pictures. great mom. great mom with great patience= great kids who obviously have a lot of patience in working on their projects.
