Last week a stranger actually had the nerve to stand in my front yard and assert to me (as my twins buzzed around my legs, I might add) that having children was a big mistake and that the sooner I learned that the better. At first I was taken aback and he persisted in his argument that having spending money was better than having kids, but I think he regretted it once I shamelessly quoted from The Family: A Proclamation to the World, given by our church leaders nearly fifteen years ago. I felt no sympathy for his position--I was right, he was wrong. Eventually he got the message: don't mess with a mom. Especially minutes after she has been bled on after nursing her daughter's skinned knee and all of her mother bear energy is flowing.
I couldn't have asked for more on Sunday--it was a great day to be a mom and daughter. It was a happy and humbling day for me, complete with a nap, a walk, great talks at church on motherhood and honoring mothers, and a Dad-made dinner. J surprised me with a marigold, D surprised me with a beautiful ring, and I surprised friends in the evening with unplanned visits and chocolate cake! My life is so full of blessings.
On Saturday we went to some local gardens to enjoy the warm wind and blooms. We could have stayed until sunset in that loveliness, but in the end we returned home for toddler-friendly picnic of sub sandwiches in our backyard.

GOOD JOB quoting the Proclamation. Mothers everywhere are cheering you on. I can't imagine what sadness would be in a person's heart to allow them to talk to you the way he did, on your property no less. Talk about trespassing! I'm glad you had a wonderful Mother's Day!!!!
Oh. The photos are perfectly happy and inviting. The tree!! The bridge! The people! I want to know the part of the proclamation you quoted. I, too, had to the 'Mother Bear' in me speak up last week after a few too many years of endless and recurring negativity from the same person. I was calm, but firm. It was the right thing to do.
Wish I could have heard the conversation with that stranger. He/she was messing with the wrong lady.
You're such a good mama.
PS. Seriously those kids get bigger & bigger with each post!
Wow, I can't believe he actually did that, I kind of feel bad for him. And way to go for quoting The Proclamation, that story should be in conference or something:)
I loved these pictures, especially J and E playing with sticks and everyone working in the yard. They all speak the peace and beauty of your family. I can't believe someone had the audacity to talk to you that way, especially when he could see you had children! I would have loved to hear you quote the proclamation -- which part did you quote? I don't know if I could do that. You're awesome, and an amazing mom!
Happy Mother's Day! I am glad your day was special. And good for you for standing up for your little ones. Out of curiosity, what part of the proclamation did you quote to him :) ?!?
Amen Sista! After living in Oregon I sadly am no longer surprised at how brazened some people are to make your family choices their business! Loving those cute kiddos of yours!
What beautiful pictures. I am glad you had such a beautiful day! Way to stand up for yourself! People have some crazy audacity.
beautiful pics and sounds like a wonderful mothers day for a wonderful mommy like you! way to stick it to 'em...maybe I need to start memorizing the proclamation too!!
Way to be Liz. If he ever comes to my neighborhood over here, he will also get an ear-full... in the form of "I would give up all my spending money and the life insurance collected to just have my kids back!" I can't believe he did that! What did he expect you to say!
You are a wonderful example of motherhood to me. Happy Mothers day!!!
and wow, I can't stop but thinking of the many blessings that person is missing by having no kids. I can't remember a single day since Nov1, 2005 that I have not have a smile on my face, even on the really "hard days".
I love it!
I love you and your blog. Thanks for sharing.
